Whose work this is made of
The photograph is somebody else's and is credited here because its licence says so. The contracts Wick calls are somebody else's too, and saying which is the only way a reader can check what they are trusting.
The photograph
Dülmen, Kirchspiel, Dernekamp, Getreide bei Sonnenaufgang -- 2021 -- 8855.jpg, by Dietmar Rabich, used under CC BY-SA 4.0 from Wikimedia Commons.
It is barley at sunrise, shot into the light. It was chosen by looking — the brand is a little of something, gathered steadily, and the warm light is what a wick gives — and then measured to see whether it worked: it carries chroma 0.09 in OKLCh at hue 63, which is what keeps this page from being the near-white-on-near-white that so many pages are.
What ships is not the original. It is cropped to its softest band, blurred 7 px, lifted through a gamma of 1.90 so that glass over it reads as tinted rather than white, and its highlights are compressed above 0.86 so that the brightest pixel a card can sit over cannot swallow the card. tools/make-ground.mjs does that, and writes down what it did.
Every photograph that was considered
| File | By | Licence | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dülmen, Kirchspiel, Dernekamp, Getreide bei Sonnenaufgang -- 2021 -- 8855.jpg | Dietmar Rabich | CC BY-SA 4.0 | Barley at sunrise, low sun straight through the ears: amber and gold in front, the far half dissolving into soft light. The CHOSEN ground — grain gathered a little at a time, and the warm light a wick gives. |
| Dülmen, Kirchspiel, Dernekamp, Getreide bei Sonnenaufgang -- 2021 -- 8812.jpg | Dietmar Rabich | CC BY-SA 4.0 | The same field, wider and flatter, with more sky and a harder horizon. |
| Nottuln, Gladbeck, Grashalm -- 2024 -- 4342.jpg | Dietmar Rabich | CC BY-SA 4.0 | One blade of grass sharp against a green and gold defocused meadow. |
| Dülmen, Kirchspiel, Oedlerteich -- 2016 -- 1949.jpg | Dietmar Rabich | CC BY-SA 4.0 | Reeds and water at golden hour, cooler, with a dark band of trees. |
| Grass, Bokeh And A Litle Beam Of Sunlight - Flickr - Alfred Grupstra.jpg | Alfred Grupstra | CC0 | Grass stems in heavy bokeh with a single beam of light; soft but low in chroma. |
Recorded at download time, not remembered afterwards: the licence, the author and the source page of each one were read from Wikimedia's own API as the file was fetched.
The colour
Every colour on this site was solved in OKLCh and proved as a pair — each surface against the photograph at its dark end and its bright end, composited in gamma space the way a browser composites it, and each ink against the thinnest glass it is ever set on. 75/75 pairs hold. The solver refuses to write the stylesheet if one does not, and there is a control that must fail.
Not ours
| What | Address | What it does here |
|---|---|---|
| Uniswap SwapRouter02 | — | every swap a pull makes |
| Uniswap QuoterV2 | — | what the app shows a pull would buy |
| Global Dollar (USDG) | — | the dollars a wick draws |
| Robinhood's price feeds | one per stock | the reference the guard measures against |
| CREATE2 deployer | — | puts Wick at its address, for whoever is first |
The only contract this project wrote is Wick itself, and it is not deployed by us.
Type
Fraunces for the display type and Inter for everything else, both open licensed, served from Google Fonts. The lockups in brand/ embed the letters they use, because an SVG that merely names a font renders as Times wherever the font is absent.
Tools
solc 0.8.26, ethers v6, hardhat for the forks, and headless Chrome for every image and every measurement of a painted pixel. There is no image library on this machine; the crops and the ground are made by Chrome's own canvas.
Words
Written for this site. Every number in them is filled at build time from the file the run that produced it wrote, and the validator refuses a page carrying a number that traces to nothing.
